Marlies Use Shootout to Edge Moose, 2-1
Despite Victory, Marlies eliminated from Postseason
 
(TORONTO) – The Marlies knocked off the Manitoba Moose, 2-1, in a shootout on Saturday afternoon, but despite the victory, were eliminated from the playoffs.
 
The Marlies entered the game seven points behind the Moose, needing a victory in regulation time to keep their playoff hopes alive. The shootout victory allowed Manitoba to gain a point which meant the Marlies playoff hopes were ruined.
 
But it was the Moose that got on the board first. Guillaume Desbiens found the back of the net while on the man-advantage to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
 
After a scoreless second period, Tim Brent beat Moose starting goalie Cory Schneider to put Toronto on the board. Brent’s game tying goal came at the 11:23 mark of the third frame gave the Marlies some life.
 
Toronto pulled their goalie with over a minute to play in the game to give them an extra attacker with the game knotted at 1-1. The Marlies had to win the game in regulation time to keep their playoff hopes alive.
 
In overtime, the Marlies and Moose both fired two shots on goal, but couldn’t score.
 
Josh Engel, Ryan Hamilton and Brent all scored in the shootout and James Reimer made three saves to give the Marlies the win.
 
Hamilton’s four-game point streak was snapped in the win.
 
Toronto hits the road in their next game, traveling to Rochester to take on the Americans on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Blue Cross Arena.
