So the Hershey Bears are on the verge of winning their 10th Calder Cup in franchise history, and the Red Wings are one win away from their 5th Stanley Cup in 12 years. Can the Pens force a Game 7? And for that matter can the Moose as they trail 3-1?
First off, you had to know the Wings weren't down and out in that series. Neither are the Penguins. Going back home to the Igloo, this series has been all about winning at home. I've got to agree with Don Cherry, that the Penguins will win Game 6, and then it will be all about who can take it back in Detroit for Game 7. I'd be really suprised if Pittsburgh came out flat at home.
Meanwhile in the AHL, just how important is it to win at home in a 2-3-2 series? Well, if it weren't for some last minute magic in Game 2 by Jason Jaffray, the Bears would have already won the Calder Cup. Another big battle at the Giant Center on Sunday, saw the Bears take down Manitoba again in another one goal game. With that, Hershey can capture the Calder Cup on home ice in Game 5 Tuesday night. Now, the Moose do have one thing in their favour. If they can scratch out a victory, then the series heads back to Winnipeg for Games 6 and 7. Despite having the AHL Goaltender of the Year in their net, the mighty Moose scoring machine has had trouble solving Micahl Neuvirth in the Bears net. I said from day one of the playoffs, if Hershey gets the goaltending, they will come out of the East. They have and they did, and even without Simeon Varlamov, they are one win away from the Cup. I kind of hope this series continues on longer, because it's been great to watch with sold out crowds in both cities bringing the excitement. But another great performance by Hershey, and they could be tasting sweet victory in Chocolatetown.
