Well, it was a great run in both Cup finals. Congrats to the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hershey Bears. The Bears went back into Winnipeg in Game 6 and finished off the Moose to win their 10th Calder Cup in franchise history. They are the oldest franchise in the league, but that number is still impressive. It was a great run by the Manitoba Moose none the less. Now, the off-season shuffle begins.
With the NHL draft coming up, all the focus is put on what players are taken and how they will help out the big club. Truth of the matter is, for most teams, half, if not more of the players selected, will have a bigger impact on their AHL team over the years. It can range anywhere from being a long-term AHL player, who is a big plus to the squad, to having a solid future NHL'er for a few seasons while he develops his game. Sure, the first round pick usually ends up going straight to the NHL, the picks from the lower rounds have to make their way through the system.
So, keep a close eye on the Leafs moves and draft picks this coming week. You never know who might turn out to be imporant Marlies players in the next couple of seasons.
