As it so often happens in the world of professional sports, times change and so do the players. That will be the case for the Toronto Marlies this upcoming season, but one change in particular will be especially noticeable.

After seven seasons in the Leafs organization, the Captain has set sail to join a new team. The Edmonton Oilers recently signed Ben Ondrus, thus ending his run as the Marlies leader, a position he has held since the 2007-08 season when he took the reins from Marc Moro, becoming just the second captain in Marlies history in Toronto.

Ondrus has nearly 400 AHL games under his belt, as injuries held him back to just 56 games this past year. He has racked up 133 career points and has 52 NHL games on his resume as well.

The qualities of Ben Ondrus go far beyond the statistics. Ben was a leader both on and off the ice. He embraced the roll of Captain and as time went on, seemed to grow into the roll even more. Many fans will know what kind of heart and determination he would play with on the ice, but the same holds true for off –ice. He showed the younger players what it meant to be a member of the Leafs organization, and what it takes to be a pro. Even when he was banged up, and what would be down and out for some players, Ben would find that extra roll of medical tape or brace that was needed, strap it on and prepare to lead the way for his team. He always played with a sense of determination.

He showed them by example the little things it takes to get your game to the next level. He was also someone you could easily talk to. No matter what the situation, he always made time for his teammates, the media, and the many youngsters he would visit after each home game with his Captain’s program. Even after a tough loss, Ben made sure to take the time to not only meet the young fans, but give them a full dressing room tour and memories that will last a lifetime.

Ask any coach, or player and they will tell you that Ben Ondrus is someone they hold the most respect for and would love to have them on their team.

For the Leafs, a new path was laid out starting last year, and as it happens in this sport, sometimes good players and teams end up going in different directions. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s the nature of the beast. Both sides know it, both sides understand it. It’s just part of the game. Sometimes fans don’t always like it, but then again, that’s what puts the passion into being a fan.

For Ondrus, a native of Sherwood Park, Alberta and a brand new dad from near the end of last season, his new direction will put him with an organization that is close to home. And while he will most likely end up in Oklahoma City with the brand new Oil Barons, it will be a new challenge. He once again, will put on his work boots, and help become a leader to a new team in a new organization.

So Ben, thank you, for everything you did wearing the blue and white. For being a leader on and off the ice, for always being that warrior who was willing to do anything for his teammates, and for taking the time to make every fan feel special. Best of luck in your new direction!
