Marlies Three-Game Winning Streak Halted by Houston
Rau’s Second Goal of the Night Downs Marlies in Overtime
(TORONTO) – The Houston Aeros used two goals by Chad Rau to down the Marlies, 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Ricoh Coliseum in front of 3,902 fans.
After a scoreless first period, Rau fired a laser-beam slapshot to beat Marlies starting goalie Adam Munro on his glove-side. Rau gained the Toronto zone and released a wicked shot that went top-corner past Munro.
The Marlies second period continues to be a struggle as they’ve now been out-scored 34-11 in the middle frame.
Darryl Boyce tied the game at 1-1 with a nifty move at the 7:33 mark of the third period.
“I just got the pass from Stalberg out front of the net and made a move on the goalie and slid it underneath him,” Boyce explained after the game. “It had more to do with my line-mates making a nice play than it did me.”
Viktor Stalberg and Andre Deveaux both picked up assists on Boyce’s first of the season.
In overtime, Rau scored his second of the night to seal the win for the Aeros, beating Munro on the glove-side again with a wrist shot from the slot.
“I was just a millisecond late on the shot,” Munro said. “I thought at first I had it, but obviously I didn’t.”
The Marlies penalty kill was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game.
Prior to puck-drop, the first 3,000 fans received a Johnny Bower bobblehead and had the chance to meet him in person.
Toronto finishes their six-game homestand on Tuesday night when they host the Abbotsford Heat at 7:00 p.m.
