Flurry of Goals in the Final Frame Seals game for Marlies
(TORONTO) – The Toronto Marlies avenged a loss to Grand Rapids from earlier in the week, beating the Griffins 3-2 in front of 3,041 fans at Ricoh Coliseum Sunday evening. Four of the goals came in the third period, including Peter Tsimikalis’ game-winner with just under nine minutes remaining in regulation.
Alex Foster scored his 15th goal of the season to put Toronto on the board at 8:28 of the middle stanza. Foster rifled a shot from the point into the top right corner of the net past Griffins’ starting goaltender Jimmy Howard. Colin Murphy earned an assist for the Marlies.
Tyler Redenbach tied the game at one with his first goal of the season. After winning a draw in the Marlies’ zone, Redenbach snapped up the puck and fired it past Toronto starting goaltender Scott Clemmensen at 4:27 of the third period.
The Marlies regained the lead when Brent Aubin scored at 5:57 of the final frame. Aubin grabbed the puck in front of the goal and then slid it under a sprawling Howard to give Toronto a 2-1 advantage.
Grand Rapids tied the game at two goals when Jamie Tardif scored at 10:41. Miscommunication in front of the Toronto net allowed Tardif to jam the puck past Clemmensen for a power-play goal. Tsimikalis scored the ultimate game-winner at 11:13 of the last period. Tsimikalis blasted a slapshot from the top of the circle that beat Howard high.
The Marlies head to Grand Rapids on Wednesday, March 19 to battle the Griffins in a 7 p.m. contest. Toronto then faces its provincial rival, the Hamilton Bulldogs, in a home-and-home series on Friday, March 21 at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton and on Saturday, March 22 at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. Face-off for Saturday’s game is 7 p.m.
ICE CHIPS: Colin Murphy has recorded a total of four assists in three consecutive games… With his assist tonight, Jaime Sifers earned his first point since January 4 against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins… Tyler Doig earned a point in consecutive games (one goal, one assist) for the first time in his AHL career.
